A router is a computer networking layer system that manages and forwards data packets. A gateway is a device or piece of hardware that serves as a 'gateway' between two networks. It might alternatively be described as a network node that serves as an entrance point for other nodes.
Routers often operate at the protocol's third layer, transmitting packets from one system to another. The network's path for transporting data packets is chosen by a router. The network system is interpreted by the gateway as endpoints from one packet to the next.
