The active directory database is maintained in a single NTDS.dit file that is partitioned logically as follows:
1. Partitioning by schema
 2. Partitioning by configuration
 3. Partitioning by domain
 4. Partitioning by application
Partitioning the Schema
Each forest has only one schema partition, which is stored in all of the forest's DCs. In an active directory, it comprises the definition of objects as well as the rules for manipulating and creating them. It is duplicated across the forest's DCs.
Partition Configuration
There is only one master configuration partition per forest and the second one on all DCs in the forest, similar to schema partition. It comprises the active directory topology for the entire forest, including DCs, sites, and services. It is reproduced across a forest's DCs.
Domain Segmentation
There are many domain partitions per forest, and they are stored on all domain DCs. They store information on users, groups, machines, and organizational units (OUs). It's copied to all of the domain's DCs.
Partitioning of Applications
In an AD, this partition maintains information about apps. Assume that this partition contains information on AD-integrated DNS zones.
