A Group Policy Object (GPO) is a collection of settings produced with the Group Policy Editor in the Microsoft Management Console (MMC). GPOs can be linked to a single Active Directory container or a group of them, such as sites, domains, or organizational units (OUs). Users may establish GPOs that specify registry-based rules, security choices, program installation, and much more using the MMC.

Local policies, site policies, domain policies, and OU policies are all applied in the same logical sequence by Active Directory.
