Allow Disk Defragmenter to run in the background.
Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista®, and Windows 10 have an improved Disk Defragmenter application that conducts periodic defragments automatically. You don't have to do anything unless you need to manually defrag

Follow these procedures to adjust the time Disk Defragmenter runs:

    1. Select the Start menu or the Windows button from the Start menu.
    2. Select Control Panel, then System and Security from the drop-down menu.
    3. Click Defragment your hard disc under Administrative Tools.
    4. To change your timetable, go to Configure schedule...
    5. Choose your preferred timetable. Choose a day and time when the computer will be turned on but no one will be using it. It's possible that the computer is sleeping.
    6. Select OK.
    Run Disk Defragmenter by hand.
It's always advisable to evaluate the disc first before running Disk Defragmenter manually.

    1. Select the Start menu or the Windows button from the Start menu.
    2. Select Control Panel, then System and Security from the drop-down menu.
    3. Click Defragment your hard disc under Administrative Tools.
    4. Analyze disc is the option to choose. If you need to defrag your drive, the report will tell you.
    5. Click Defragment disc if you need to manually defrag your drive.
