  • Use Time Machine, your Mac's built-in backup function, to back up your personal data, including apps, music, photographs, email, and documents, automatically.
  • An external storage device, such as a USB or Thunderbolt drive, should be connected. Find out more about backup discs and how to use them with Time Machine.
  • From the Time Machine option in the menu bar, select Preferences. Alternatively, go to the Apple menu>System Preferences > Time Machine.
  • Select a backup disc by clicking on it.
  • Select your disk's name, then click Use Disk. Time Machine starts producing backups on a regular basis right away, without you having to do anything.
  • Choose Back Up Now from the Time Machine menu in the menu bar if you want to start a backup manually rather than waiting for the next automated backup.
