Wait a few moments.
Perhaps your Mac is just overworked as a result of all the open files and programmes that are operating in the background. It simply requires a little more time to shut down in this scenario. We recommend waiting up to 5 minutes for your Mac to shut down and exit any active processes.

If certain programmes refuse to quit, your MacBook will not shut down. So, before you start looking for issues, ensure sure no unresponsive programmes are interfering with the shutdown process.

Here's how to tell if an app isn't responding:

  1. The Dock's app icons are jumping about.
  2. A dialogue window appears on your screen advising you to close a certain programme.
  3. Some apps display a notification window.
To resolve the issue of unresponsive applications, follow these steps:

  1. Right-click the app and select Quit or Force Quit from the menu.
  2. If it doesn't work, select Force Quit from the Apple menu.
  3. If your Mac won't shut down after you've stopped the app, click the Apple logo again > Shut Down.
