The Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) is a Layer 2 network protocol that prevents network looping. STP was intended to solve the challenges that emerge when computers exchange data through redundant channels on a local area network (LAN). If traffic flow is not properly monitored and regulated, data can become stuck in a loop that cycles around network segments, degrading performance and bringing traffic to a standstill.
