His love for countryside
Despite of belonging to the rich family he preferred simple lifestyle and pleasure. Most of the time he was seen barefooted at his country estate, Yasnaya Polyana where he joined peasants. His love for the countryside was reflected in some of his characters like Konstantin Levin in Anna Karenina.
He was a famous linguist
During his life Tolstoy mastered in many languages. Along with English, French and German he had also good command in Greek, Latin, Spanish, Italian, Ukrainian, Turkish and Bulgarian. His house library comprised of 23000 books in 39 languages.
He didn't wished for Nobel Prize
Inspite of being one of the greatest writers of all the time, it seemed strange that he wasn't even considered for Nobel Prize in literature. Though nin 1906, he was put forward by Russian Academy of Science's yet he didn't wanted the prize.
He idealised poverty
Tolstoy tends to follow his dogmatic belief that a right way of living is to live in poverty and wanted to decline all author's right to his book.
He was an avid penpal
Being an active novelist and writer, he was also in connection with his readers across the globe. Mahatma Gandhi was among his notable penpal who followed the Tolstoy's ideology that evil can't be fought with hate.
