"Bharat Ratna"

In simple term, Bharat Ratna stands for Jewel of India. Our country has given birth too many stories of bravery since the era of Eknath. Probably there is no scale to measure their sacrifices, although we cannot turn our eyes to those who have excelled in their respective areas and have given the honor of our country and have given us international recognition.

Bharat Ratna is the highest civilian honor of our country, which is provided for exceptional service in the field of Arts, Literature, and Science and for recognition of the highest level of public service. It is also not mandatory that Bharat Ratna Award will be given every year.

The Bharat Ratna Award was started from 2nd Jan in the year 1954. The first award was given to renowned scientist Chandra Shekhar Venkataraman. Since then, many awards have been presented to get excellence in their respective fields. In fact, our former President, Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam has also been given this prestigious award in the year 1997.

There is no written provision that Bharat Ratna should be given to Indian citizens only. Anjezë Gonxhe Bojaxhiu, whom we know as Mother Teresa and two other non-Indians - Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan and Nelson Mandela (1990) have also been honored with this award.

In 2009, the award was conferred to famous Indian singer Pandit Bhimsen Gururaj Joshi. Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar and eminent scientist Prof. CNR Rao were honored with the Bharat Ratna by President Pranab Mukherjee in New Delhi on February 4, 2014, in New Delhi.
