The Lowland is one of the finest books I have ever read. It connects you to the origins where you have come from, yet you still go out of the box to achieve goals in life. It is published by Alfred A. Knopf and Random House in 2013, making it New York Times Best Seller list.

When was the Lowland written?

The Lowland is the second novel by Indian American author Jhumpa Lahiri best known for her portrayal of lives undone and fabricated. The Lowland creates a vision as if you are also a part of it, witnessing the two brothers Udayan and Shubhash, slowly unfolding their lives in Tollygunge, where they wandered before dusk in the hyacinth stored ponds. Udayan and Subhash were inseparable once the policemen caught them while climbing back the Tolly Club wall. They had picked gulf balls when the policemen enquire the two; Udayan took the blame on him wanting to protect Shubhash.

The book is a masterpiece for me. It follows the two brothers from their early life to going on their separate ways; no matter whether one does not express much, the love remains between the two as one of them applied for Ph.D. in MIT, and the other becomes politically active. Lahiri has a way of telling gripping stories that explores the relationship within the family that leaves an imprint of gratitude of having your parents in another room of the same house.

It isn't easy to put it in words how Subhash and Udayan had felt when their father died. As a reader, I completely love this book; Jhumpa Lahiri deserved the Pulitzer Prize for her other book, Interpreter of Maladies.
