India has failed when faced with threats to national security, both external and internal, over the course of its sixty-six years of independence. The challenges have been numerous, but the responses have been uniformly amateurish.

Jaswant Singh wonders why. Is it because of conceptual fault lines or governance fractures? Both, according to Jaswant Singh, effectively lay bare the obstacles, solutions, and repercussions of failing to achieve the goal of credible defense and security in independent India.

Jaswant Singh gives a very knowledgeable and insightful examination of the primary obstacles that India has encountered over the last sixty-six years: the conflicts, issues, and consequences that we are still dealing with today. What does the first quarter of the twenty-first century look like?
