The word was first popularised in cricket before spreading to other sports. This can be a player from either team, though it is most often the winning team.
In the mid-1980s, the man-of-the-match award in cricket became a regular feature in Test matches.
However, there have been numerous occasions when a player from the losing side has received an award for his efforts.
