The first Cricket World Cup was held in 1975 in England and was officially called the "Prudential Cup". The tournament was organized by the International Cricket Council (ICC), the international governing body of cricket.

The idea for a cricket world cup was first proposed by the sports journalist Sir Pelham Warner in 1950, but it wasn't until 1971 that the ICC officially approved the idea of a world cup tournament. The inaugural tournament was held four years later in 1975, and featured eight teams from around the world.

The teams were divided into two groups of four, and each team played the other teams in their group once. The top two teams from each group advanced to the semi-finals, and the winners of the semi-finals then faced each other in the final.

The first Cricket World Cup was sponsored by the Prudential Assurance Company, and as a result, the tournament was officially called the "Prudential Cup". The trophy, which was designed by the London-based jeweler Garrard & Co., featured a golden cricket ball on top of three stumps.

The tournament was a huge success, with matches being played in iconic cricket grounds such as Lord's and The Oval in England. The final, which was played at Lord's, saw the West Indies defeat Australia by 17 runs to become the first ever cricket world champions.

Since then, the Cricket World Cup has been held every four years, with only the exception of 1992, when it was held in Australia and New Zealand. The tournament has grown in size and popularity over the years, and now features 10 teams from around the world. The most recent Cricket World Cup was held in 2019 in England and was won by the host nation, who defeated New Zealand in a thrilling final at Lord's.
