The first recorded cricket match in India was played in 1721, when a team of British sailors, led by Captain Edward Russell, played a local team in the town of Cambay in present-day Gujarat.

At the time, India was still under British colonial rule, and cricket was introduced to the country as a means of entertainment and recreation for the British officials and traders who were living there.

The match in Cambay was played on a rudimentary pitch, with no boundaries or markings to indicate where the field of play ended. The British team batted first and scored 28 runs in their innings, with the locals managing just 16 in their reply.

The match was a modest affair, but it marked the beginning of a long and storied history of cricket in India. Over the years, cricket became increasingly popular among the Indian population, and the sport took on a special significance as a symbol of national pride and identity.

One of the most significant moments in the history of Indian cricket came in 1932, when India played its first-ever Test match against England at Lord's in London. Despite losing the match, the Indian team put in a creditable performance, with Mohandas Menon scoring India's first-ever Test century.

Over the years, Indian cricket continued to go from strength to strength, with the likes of Vijay Hazare, Sunil Gavaskar, and Sachin Tendulkar becoming household names both in India and around the world.
