Sunil Gavaskar is widely regarded as one of the greatest batsmen in the history of Indian cricket. He had an illustrious career spanning over two decades, during which he set numerous records and achieved many milestones. In his first-class cricket career, which spanned from 1966 to 1987, Gavaskar scored a total of 81 centuries. This includes 34 centuries in Test matches and 47 centuries in domestic cricket.

Gavaskar made his first-class debut in 1966 at the age of 17 for his home team Bombay (now Mumbai). He went on to score his maiden first-class century in his debut season itself, scoring an unbeaten 114 against Baroda in the Ranji Trophy.

Gavaskar's greatest achievement in first-class cricket came in 1985 when he surpassed Sir Donald Bradman's record of 29 Test centuries. Gavaskar scored his 30th Test century against Pakistan in Lahore, becoming the first batsman in the history of Test cricket to achieve the feat.

Apart from his record-breaking feats, Gavaskar was known for his consistency in first-class cricket. He scored over 10,000 runs in both Test and domestic cricket, and finished his first-class career with a staggering average of 51.46.

Gavaskar's impressive performances in first-class cricket earned him several accolades throughout his career, including the Wisden Cricketer of the Year award in 1971 and the Padma Bhushan, one of India's highest civilian awards, in 1980.

In addition to his impressive record of 81 first-class centuries, Gavaskar also holds several other records in Indian cricket, including the record for the most Test runs by an Indian batsman (10,122) and the record for the most Test centuries by an Indian batsman (34). His contribution to Indian cricket has been immense, and he remains an iconic figure in Indian cricket even today.
