The inaugural Wightman Cup, named after founder Hazel Hotchkiss Wightman, took place in 1923. It is an annual women's team tennis match between the United States and the United Kingdom. It took place at the West Side Tennis Club in Forest Hills, Queens, in New York City, New York, USA. The competition was originally supposed to begin on Friday, August 10th, but was postponed until Saturday due to President Warren G. Harding's death. Because there was no play on Sunday, the tournament ended on Monday, August 13th. The inaugural championship served as the inaugural match of the West Side Tennis Club's freshly constructed tennis facility.

The inaugural cup was won by the United States team, which won all seven matches.

From 1923 through 1989, the Wightman Cup was awarded to the winner of annual women's tennis matches between British and American teams. Five singles and two doubles matches were played in the competition. Hazel Hotchkiss Wightman donated the cup itself in 1923. (q.v.).

Matches were played in the United States inodd-numbered years and in Great Britain in even-numbered years.
