Golf is the game which is played on links

Along the water's edge is a true links course. It contains sandy soil and minimal vegetation, with the exception of tall seagrasses and gorse (a hearty, low-growing, evergreen plant). The golf holes are designed using the natural terrain. The game of golf was born in this type of area for a number of reasons, one of which was that it was conducive to play. Many of the bunkers were formerly natural, windswept dunes, and course designers had limited tools for moving earth to build the course. The holes are laid out like a classic links course, with the first nine taking you to the farthest point from the clubhouse and the second nine returning you to it (OUT & IN).

The word 'links' is derived from the Old English word 'hlinc,' which means ridge or rising ground. This characterized the sort of hilly topography found around the UK's coasts. This terrain is typically rough, sandy underfoot, remarkably undulating, and exceedingly windy. Due to these conditions, tree development is limited, and the area is defined by tall, thick, scratchy native grasses. A links golf course has these characteristics as well.
