The most prominent competitions in professional golf are the major golf championships, generally known as the Majors. The Master's Tournament, the US Open, The Open Championship, and the PGA Championship are all annual tournaments. A grand slam would be achieved if a single golfer won all majors in the same calendar year. This has never been done before. Tiger Woods is the only player to have won all majors on consecutive occasions, which he did in the 2000–2001 season.

• The PGA Championship, hosted by the PGA of America and held at several locales across the United States, takes place in May.
• The United States Golf Association (USGA) hosts the U.S. Open each June, which is held at several locales across the country.
• The Open Championship is held in July and is always held on a links course in a different location in the United Kingdom.
• The Ryder Cup is held every year at several locations across any country.

Jack Nicklaus holds the record for most major championships won, with 18 victories. Tiger Woods is ranked second on the list, having won 15 major championships to date, the most recent of which was the 2019 Masters. WalterHagen is in third place with 11 majors, and he and Jack Nicklaus have both won five PGA Championships.Nicklaus also owns the record for most Masters triumphs, having won the tournament six times. Nicklaus also holds the record for most US Open triumphs with Willie Anderson, Bobby Jones, and Ben Hogan, who have all won four times. With six Open Championship titles during his career, Harry Vardon holds the record for most Open Championship victories.

Only five golfers: Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, and Gene Sarazen have won all majors during their careers, achieving the career grand slam.

The U.S. Amateur and The Amateur Championship were originally regarded majors, but they are no longer deemed such, thus victories in these tournaments are not included in the list.

There have been 458 majors played so far. A total of 227 men have won majors, with 84 of them winning at least two.
