Ice hockey at the 2006 Winter Olympics was held at the Torino Palasport Olimpico and the Torino Esposizioni in Turin, Italy. Sweden won the men's competition, which took place from 15 to 26 February, while Canada won the women's competition, which took place from 11 to 20 February.

The Palasport Olimpico, Italy's largest arena, was inaugurated in 2005. It was largely utilized for pop concerts afterthe Olympics. Since the Olympics, the Torino Esposizioni has only hosted exhibits and trade shows, and it is largely used for exhibitions and trade shows. Both men's and women's tournaments were held this year. The women's field was expanded to eight teams, divided into two four-team pools. The top two teams in each pool advanced to the semi-finals, where the champions competed for the gold medal, which was won by Canada.

The biggest story from the women's tournament was that the final would not be between Canada and the United States after the Americans were beaten in overtime by Sweden in the semi-finals.

NHL franchises once again allowed their players to participate in the Winter Olympics, However, the format was different. As in 1998 and 2002, the 12 teams were divided into two pools of six, with no direct seeding into the final pools. Each pool advanced four teams to a single-elimination medal event.
