As per the 2011 population census, the overall literacy rate in Punjab is 75.84 %. The male literacy rate in Punjab is 80.44 % and the female literacy rate in the state is 70.73 %. As compared to the male literacy rate in India the male literacy rate in Punjab is slightly less while the female literacy rate in Punjab is better than the female literacy rate in India. The male and female literacy rate in India as per the 2011 census is 80.90 % and 64.60 % respectively.
The literacy rate of Punjab has improved by 6.1 % over the last decade. The literacy rate is also termed as effective literacy rate. It is calculated by the following formula
Effective Literacy Rate = (number of literate persons aged 7 or above/ population aged 7 or above) * 100
However Crude Literacy Rate according to the Indian census since 1991 is calculated by the following formula
Crude Literacy Rate = (number of literate persons/total population) * 100
Punjab an Indian state lies to the northern part of the country.
