Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu (born on 11th July 1953) an Indian politician from Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) is the Minister of Commerce and Industry. He assumed the office from 3rd September 2017 under Prime Minister Mr Narendra Modi.
Mr Suresh Prabhu is also the Minister of Aviation. He assumed office on 12th March 2018 under Prime Minister Mr Narendra Modi.
Mr Suresh Prabhu was born in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. He was the Minister of Railways under Modi Government from 9th November 2014 to 3rd September 2017. He was also the Minister of Power from 30th September 2000 to 24th August 2002 under Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. A Charted Accountant by profession Mr Suresh Prabhu is a member of Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI). Earlier Mr Suresh Prabhu was a member of Shiv Sena political party and represented Rajapur constituency in the Lok Sabha from 1996 to 2009. He joined the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) in November 2014. Mr Prabhu represented Haryana in Rajya Sabha from 29th November 2014 to 21st June 2016. At present Mr Prabhu represents Andhra Pradesh in Rajya Sabha from 22nd June 2016.
Mr Suresh Prabhu is the head of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. The headquarters of the Ministry is in New Delhi. The Ministry of Commerce and Industry is divided into Department of Commerce and Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion. Both the departments are entrusted with their respective responsibilities.
The function of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry is to formulate, implement and monitor the Foreign Trade Policy (FTP) to promote exports and trade. The Ministry reviews the Foreign Trade Policy (FTP) periodically to implement the necessary changes of emerging economic trends at the domestic as well as at the international level. The Ministry also formulates and regulates policies related to bilateral commercial relations, development of export industries, state trading and Special Economic Zones.
Syama Prasad Mukherjee was the first Minster of Commerce and Industry of independent India under Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.
