He held office from 6th June 1980 to 10th October 1983 representing Nakodar constituency in Jalandhar district, Punjab, India. Darbara Singh was an Indian politician belonging to the Indian National Congress (INC) party.

He was the Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha or the Council of States (upper house of the parliament) representing Punjab from 1984 to 1990. Singh was also the Member of Parliament in the Lok Sabha (lower house of the parliament) representing Hoshiarpur, Punjab from 1971 to 1977.

Captain Amarinder Singh is also the chairman of Punjab Urdu Academy.
