Dr Harsh Vardhan (born on 13th December 1954) an Indian politician is the current Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. He assumed office as Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change on 27th May 2014. He is also the Minister of Science and Technology and he assumed office on 9th November 2014. He is also the Minister of Earth Sciences and he assumed office on 9th November 2014. He is handling these portfolios under Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Dr Harsh Vardhan born in New Delhi, India is a member of Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP). He is a Member of the 16th Lok Sabha and represents Chandni Chowk. He assumed office as Member of Parliament from 16th May 2014. Dr Harsh Vardhan was Member of the Delhi Legislative Assembly for Krishna Nagar and was in office from 1993 to 16th May 2014. He was the Minister of Health and Family Welfare from 26th May 2014 to 9th November 2014. For the 2013 Delhi Assembly elections, Dr Harsh Vardhan was the Chief Ministerial candidate for the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP).
Apart from being a politician, Dr Harsh Vardhan is also an Otolaryngologist by profession. He completed his graduation from Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi Memorial Medical College, Kanpur in 1979. He received the degree of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery in the same year from the same college. Later in 1983, Dr Harsh Vardhan received the degree of Master of Surgery in Otorhinolaryngology from the same university. Since childhood, Dr Vardhan has been associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS).
The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change is a portfolio under the Government of India with the headquarters at Indira Paryavaran Bhavan, Jorbagh Road, New Delhi. The ministry is responsible for the planning, implementation and promotion of the various environmental and forestry schemes. The main function of this ministry is the conservation of the flora and fauna of India and prevention and control of pollution, land degradation, afforestation etc. this ministry is also responsible for the conservation of the national parks of the country. Indian Forest Service (IFoS) is under the direct control of this ministry.
