As per the 2011 population census, the overall literacy rate in Punjab is 75.84 %. The female literacy rate in Punjab is 70.73 % and the male literacy rate in the state is 80.44 %. As compared to the male literacy rate in India the male literacy rate in Punjab is slightly less while the female literacy rate in Punjab is better than the female literacy rate in India. The male and female literacy rate in India as per the 2011 census is 80.90 % and 64.60 % respectively.

However Crude Literacy Rate according to the Indian census since 1991 is calculated by the following formula

Crude Literacy Rate = (number of literate persons/total population) * 100
