In the early stages of the 20th century, the movement of Champaran was organized which culminated in the whole of India. The importance of this movement is also greater because Mahatma Gandhi actively entered the Indian politics from here. Satyagraha started with Champaran only. 

Land contracts were given to the planters in this area by the British. Planters had applied the "three tough systems". According to the three tough systems, every farmer had to cultivate Neel in 15% of the land worth his farming. The farmers were restricted to sell their own grown Neel out.

They had to sell plantation owners at a lower price than the market price. It was oppression of the farmers. Fertilization of the fields also decreased with the cultivation of Neel from above.

Some successful farmers and some Congress workers also helped the farmers in this movement. In 1916, Gandhiji was invited to the Champaran by Rajkumar Shukla. Gandhiji came to Champaran in 1917 AD. With the support of Rajendra Prasad, Dr. Narayan Singh, Acharya Kriplani and other important leaders, they reviewed the miserable situation of Champaran.

A large number of farmers reached the refuge of Gandhiji after complaining of atheists of the Nilhon. Gandhiji urged the farmers to adopt the non-violent and non-cooperation approach. This led to a new communication of enthusiasm among the farmers and unity among them increased.

The government got worried about the popularity of Gandhi. He was arrested forcibly and was tried without trial on the basis of his head. But Gandhi was released soon. The government formed a committee to investigate the grievances of farmers. Gandhi was also kept as a member of this committee.

Based on the recommendations of the committee, the Champaran Agrarian Act. Tinker-system was abolished through this act. Farmers get a lot of relief from this. The farmers got new consciousness and they started giving their support to the national movement.
