As per KK Birla foundation’s announcement eminent Hindi writer Mamta Kalia (2nd November 1940) will be getting the 27th Vyas Samman for her novel Dukkham Sukkham for the year 2017.

Vyas Samman is given to authors for their eminent contribution to Hindi literature which have been published in the last ten years. KK Birla foundation presents this award annually. The award includes prize money of 3.5 lakh Indian rupees

Krishna Kumar Birla established the KK Birla Foundation in 1991 at Delhi. The foundation’s mission is to promote both English and Hindi Literature (Hindi Literature especially). Apart from promoting literature the foundation also promotes art, education as well as social work.

Ram Vilas Sharma an eminent poet and critic was the first person to receive the award in the year 1991.

KK Birla foundation stated that Sahitya Akademi director and author Vishwanath Prasad Tiwari who headed the selection committee has decided to honour Mamta Kalia with the award for her novel Dukkham Sukkham which was published in the year 2009.

Born in Vrindavan, Uttar Pradesh, India in 1940 Mamta completed her MA in English from Delhi University. After her post-graduation, she took up lectureship at SNDT Women’s University in Mumbai.

She headed a degree college in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, India since 1973. She retired in 2001.

Mamta Kalia earlier received “Yashpal Katha Samman”, “Sahitya Bhushan Samman”, and “Ram Manohar Lohia Samman” from Uttar Pradesh Hindi Sansthan.

Some of her famous work in Hindi and English includes “Beghar”, “Suddenly One Day”, “Pardesi”,” Run”, “Bolne Wali Aurat”.
