(Tuirial dam)
The Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi dedicated the 60 MW Tuirial Hydro Electric Power Project (HEPP) to the nation on 16th December 2017. The Tuirial dam is situated in the state of Mizoram. It is an earthfill and gravity dam. The main purpose of the dam is hydroelectric power production. The dam has been built on Tuirial river which is a tributary of Barak river and hence the name Tuirial dam.
The construction of the dam began in the year 1998. Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee was the Prime Minister of the country at that time and he gave clearance for the project. It is a central sector project, which is built at a cost of ?1302 crores. The project was being executed by North Eastern Electric Power Corporation (NEEPCO) under the union ministry of power until the project was halted by Tuirial Crop Corporation Claimant Association in the year 2004. The construction work resumed in the year 2010 after the approval of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA). Tuirial dam is the second largest earthen dam and the largest dam in the country. This dam produces 250 million units of electrical energy every year. There are two turbines with a capacity of 30MW in the Tuirial Hydro Electric Power Project. The height of the dam is approximately 100 meters.
