People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) was founded on 22nd March 1980 by Ingrid Newkirk and Alex Pacheco. It is an American animal rights organization with its headquarters at Norfolk, Virginia, United States. The main focus of the organization is animal rights with the slogan “Animals are not ours to eat, wear, experiment on, use for entertainment, or abuse in any other way”. The organization got attention in the summer of 1981 with the Silver Spring monkey’s case where experiments were being conducted on 17 monkeys inside the Institute of Behavioral Research in Silver Spring, Maryland. PETA is the largest animal rights group in the world with Ingrid Newkirk being its international president. The organization has around 6.5 million members (including supporters) and 389 employees. The organization earned revenue of $48.5million in the year 2017.

Anushka Sharma was born on 1st May 1988 in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh, India. She is an actress by profession. Anushka Sharma received PETA 2017 Person of the Year Award for her wide-reaching work for animals. Her work ranges from helping to protect dogs from fireworks to advocating for horses that are forced to pull carriages in Mumbai. Anushka Sharma launched her cruelty- free clothing line known as NUSH. She also launched a campaign called PAWsitive with an aim to raise awareness of the sufferings caused to the animals during fireworks. Anushka Sharma uses social media to an extent to demand a ban on cruel carriage rides in Mumbai. In the year 2015 Anushka Sharma received the title of PETA’s Hottest Vegetarian Celebrity. Apart from Anushka Sharma, actors Hema Malini, R Madhavan, Jacqueline Fernandez, comedian Kapil Sharma, former Supreme Court Justice KS RadhakrishnanPanicker and Dr Sashi Tharoor have won the PETA’s Person of the Year award.
