Termed as “Vishva Hindi Divas” in Hindi, the day is observed annually by the Ministry of External Affairs Government of India on 10th January every year. The main purpose of celebrating this day is to spread the greatness of the Hindi language at the global level. The Union Ministry of External Affairs (MoEA) organizes various events to spread the greatness of this language. The day was first observed on 10th January 2006. The National Hindi Divas or commonly called as Hindi Divas is observed on 14th September every year. The main difference between World Hindi Day and Hindi Divas is that World Hindi Day is the promotion of Hindi language at the international level whereas Hindi Divas is observed across the country at the national level.

The first World Hindi Conference was held in the year 1975. The conference was held from 10th January 1975 – 12th January 1975 at Nagpur, India. The conference was inaugurated on 10th January 1975 by the then Prime Minister of India Indira Gandhi. The Prime Minister of Mauritius Seewoosagur Ramgoolam was the Chief Guest of the event. Around 120 delegates from 30 countries participated in the 1975 World Hindi Conference. Termed as “Vishva Hindi Sammelan”, World Hindi Conference is a world conference on the Hindi language. Several Hindi scholars, writers from the different parts of the world participate in the conference. The World Hindi Conference is held every three years. The tenth World Hindi Conference was held from 10th September 2015 to 12th September 2015 at Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, India. The next World Hindi Conference or the eleventh World Hindi Conference is scheduled to be held at Port Louis, Mauritius from 18th August 2018 to 20th August 2018.
