WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has been granted Ecuadorian citizenship on 12th December 2017.

Julian Assange was born on 3rd July 1971 as Julian Paul Hawkins. He was born in Townsville, Queensland, Australia. Julian Assange is an Australian computer programmer. He was the founder of WikiLeaks. He founded WikiLeaks in the year 2006. WikiLeaks came into limelight in the year 2010 when it published a series of leaks provided by Chelsea Manning. The leaks provided by Chelsea Manning included the video of CableGate (November 2010), Collateral Murder video (April 2010), the Afghanistan war logs (July 2010) and the Iraq war logs (October 2010). Post the publication of these leaks, the United States Government launched a criminal investigation into WikiLeaks.

Sweden issued an international arrest warrant for WikiLeaks Director and editor-in-chief, Julian Assange. Before the publication of the leaks, he was earlier questioned over the allegations of sexual assault and rape. Julian Assange denied the allegations. Moreover, Assange expressed concern about him being extradited from Sweden to the United States on account of publishing secret American documents. However, Assange surrendered before the UK police on 7th December 2010 where he was released on bail before being held for ten days. Seeing the unsuccessful challenge to his extradition proceedings, Julian Assange breached his bail and absconded. In August 2012, Assange was granted asylum by Ecuador. Julian Assange has remained in the Embassy of Ecuador in London, England (by right of asylum) since then.
