Pratyush is the new supercomputer of India. Established at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) Pune, Maharashtra, India Pratyush has a speed of 4.0 petaflops. The supercomputer Pratyush meaning sun was inaugurated by Dr Harsh Vardhan, Minister of Science and Technology, Government of India on 8th January 2018

Apart from inaugurating the supercomputer Pratyush, Dr Harsh Vardhan also inaugurated the supercomputer Mihir. The supercomputer Mihir was established at the National Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasting at Noida, Uttar Pradesh. Supercomputer Mihir has a speed of 2.8 petaflops. The High-Performance Computing (HPC) facility, Pratyush and Mihir combined together produces a speed of 6.8 petaflops. The High-Performance Computers consists of several computers and is the first multi-petaflops supercomputer built in India. The High-Performance Computing (HPC) facility is built with an estimated cost of INR 438.90 crores. The supercomputers will be used for weather forecasting and climate monitoring. As of January 2018, Pratyush and Mihir are the fastest supercomputers in the country.

Inaugurating the High-Performance Computing (HPC) facility, Dr Harsh Vardhan stated that this High-Performance Computers (HPC) has improved India’s ranking in the world in terms of HPC facilities. India has jumped into the top 30s from 368th position. Dr Vardhan also stated that India is now ranked 4th in the world after Japan, UK and USA in terms of HPC facilities for weather and climate. This facility will help in the forecast of monsoons and prediction of cyclones more accurately.
