In the year of 1962, the center has its establishment and was recognized as “Thumba Equatorial Rocket Launching Station.” This was later renamed as the honor to Dr. Vikram Sarabhai, who has been a renowned scientist and was designated as the Father of Indian Space Program.

This Space Center is one of the prime research and development organization within Indian Space and Research Organization. Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre is completely primeval facilities which are involved in the working of the development of sound rockets, the Menaka and the Rohini launchers, and the PSLV, GSLV MK III, ASLV, and GSLV are the families of the launch automobiles.

Mr. S. Somanath, a renowned Indian Aerospace Engineer & Rocket Technologist, as taken over his charge as the Director of Vikram Sarabhai Space Center. He has succeeded Mr. K. Sivan, who turned out to be a Chairman of Indian Space and Research Organization in a recent time. Well, prior to this designation he served as the Director of Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre at Valiamala in Thiruvananthapuram, the prime center which was renowned of its Liquid Stages and Engines for all launch automobiles and satellite programs of Indian Space and Research Organization. He was also renowned for his contribution to the launch of automobile designs, in specific to the areas of launch automobile system engineering, structural dynamics, pyrotechnics, and structural design.
