The Union cabinet headed by the then Prime Minister of India Manmohan Singh approved this proposal of the Law Ministry to celebrate national voter’s day in the country. The reason for such an initiative was to encourage the youth to take an active part in the political process and to enrol them in the electoral rolls. Based on certain data collected by the ministry it was observed that young voters who have attained the age of 18 were least interested in getting enrolled in the electoral rolls. To deal with this issue the Election Commission decided to identify all the eligible voters in the country and to enrol them on time by handing them their Electoral Photo Identity Card on 25th January every year. The new eligible voters were provided with a badge with a logo “Proud to be a voter – Ready to vote”. It was expected that such a move by the Government of India will give the youth a sense of pride and empowerment and inspire them to cast their votes. Later a slogan was also joined to emphasize about the initiative. The slogan read as “No Voter to be left behind”
