Thepreparation of Hydrogen is in two ways one is the laboratory process and the other is the industrial process. The laboratory process involves the action of dilute sulfuric acid of dilute hydrochloric acid on Zink granules.

How can I prepare hydrogen?

What is Hydrogen gas?
As we know among all the other matter like oxygen and nitrogen, this gas is also present in the abundant form in the surrounding as in the form of ‘H2’ gas and which can be compressed into liquid as CNG. The presence of the compound in the water also makes it more crucial for humans to survive. It is used in the form of fuel in the rockets and engines of airplanes. The process of production and managing the Hydrogen is costly that’s why it is not used in our regular use.

Laboratory preparation of Hydrogen gas
The process of making hydrogen in the lab is by the action of dilute Sulfuric acid or the dilute hydrochloric acid on the Zinc granules. The granulated form of Zink is best suitable for this preparation because this contains a small amount of Copper that increases the rate of reaction and speeds up the reaction. This is called the catalystwhich increases the speed of reaction without participating in it.

Procedure for preparation
  • Take out the few grams of Zinc granules and place them in the flask of about 500 ml.
  • Now add the dilute hydrochloric acid with the help of a funnel in place of hydrochloric acid the dilutesulfuric acid can also be used
  • During the reaction, the hydrogen gas evolved which can be delivered with the help of delivering tube via the downward placement of water. The use of water is because the hydrogen gas is lighter than the water.

Characteristics and use of the hydrogen gas
  • The hydrogen gas is colorless and also soluble in water. This solubility is not affected by the Changement in temperature.
  • The hydrogen gas is used to fill in the balloons and the airships
  • Hydrogen gas is also used in the hardening of animal oil and other vegetable oil.
  • In the wide aspect, it is used as a fuel in the oxyhydrogen bow pipes.
