The first-ever “Pelican Bird Festival- 2018’ was hosted by Andhra Pradesh. The festival was organized on February 4, 2018, at the ‘Atapaka Bird Sanctuary’ on Kolleru Lake.

The festival was organized in c-ordination with Andhra Pradesh Tourism Authority (APTA) and Krishna District Administration. The festival was organized for the first time. Kolleru Lake is the largest freshwater lake in India which is located between the Krishna and Godavari River delta. The delta between the rivers has been declared as the Wildlife Sanctuary in November 1999. As well as, the delta has been recognized Internationally as the Wetland in November 2002, under Ramsar Convention.
During the winter season, thousands of migratory bird of different breeds came to Kolleru Lake. During their stay period, they roost and breed, and later fly away with their offspring as the weather shifts towards hot temperature. Due to this huge gathering of these Pelicans, Siberian Cranes, Ibis, and Painted Storks bird, the Bird Sanctuary got the recognition as one of the largest Pelican gatherings in the world. The sanctuary is filled with about 5000 Pelican birds during the Winter Season, these birds travel over 3500 km of distance to come to the Sanctuary from different parts of the world.
The Pelican Bird Festival was conducted for the first time and has been very successful in terms of attracting tourist. So, the authorities are being hopeful to conduct the festival every year and attract a huge number of tourists. As the Bird Sanctuary provides important and relevant habitat for resident and all these migratory birds.
