What is the theme of the 2018 World Radio Day (WRD)?
The World Radio Day was celebrated annually on February 13 and the day was suggested to be celebrated on November 3, 2011, by the UNESCO’s 36th General Conference. The UNESCO invited in its 7th Edition Annual Function, all the Radio Stations from around the world to show the beauty of sports in all of its diversities. The events also cover the three sub-themes, ‘Diversity in Sports Coverage’, ‘Gender Equality in Sports Coverage’, and ‘Peace and Development through Sports Coverage’.
The day 13 February, for World Radio Day was chosen because the anniversary of the United Nations Radio, the United Nation’s International Broadcasting service was established on the same day i.e. February 13, 1946.
The initiative of World Radio Day was proposed by Spain over the request of Spanish Radio Academy to the UNESCO Executive Board. After that, UNESCO made a wide consultation in 2011 to its diverse stakeholders, and about more than 90% of them are in favor of the project. Then, from 2012, the event has been organized annually every year. The first event was hosted at Barcelona in Spain.
UNESCO even suggested for inviting local schools, sports teams, or traditional and cultural sporting group to showcase their sport and talent. Invite women players as well to generate the level of equality as the theme suggests. As well as, organize mixed sports event in the country and your region. And many more instructions were given by the UNESCO to promote sports and gender equality, as the theme of the World Radio Day follows. The event was organized to celebrate the theme of humanity in its diversity.
