Ronald Wilson Reagan was an American republican who functioned as the country's 40th governor from 1981 to 1989. He was the Republican Party's 33rd governorship of California from 1967 to 1975, following a profession as a Hollywood star and union activist.

Reagan was born in Tampico, Illinois, to a low-income household. In 1932, he attended Eureka College and later worked as a sports broadcaster on television in Iowa. Reagan travelled to California in 1937, where he gained a career as anartist and starred in several prominent shows. Reagan was the leader of the Screen Actors Guild from 1947 to 1952, during which period he attempted to drive out the supposed spread of communism inside the guild. In the 1950s, he transitioned to a media professional and became a spokesperson for General Electric. From 1959 to 1960, he was leader of the Screen Actors Guild once more. In 1964, his campaigning talk for Republican candidate contender Barry Goldwater, 'A Time for Choosing,' garnered him nationwide notice as a new right-wing personality.

Reagan declared his nomination for the Republican Party in the 1980 election in November 1979. He secured both the Democratic presidential nominee and the elections, beating former Democratic President Jimmy Carter. Reagan was the oldest individual to hold the office of President of the United States at the time of his first ceremony, at the age of 69 years and 349 days. Reagan stood for renewal in the 1984 presidential race but was defeated by Democratic contender Walter Mondale, who had earlier worked as Carter's vice president. Reagan beat him in an overwhelming victory, receiving the most elected members of any President of the united states (525). It is one of the most devastating national campaigns in American history.
