The Republican Party and the Democratic Party have become the 2 major political groups since the 1860s. The Democratic Party holds the majority of members in the House of Representatives, whereas the Senate is split 50-50 between Republicans and Democrats.
Andrew Jackson was the first President of the Democratic Party, which was founded in 1828 as a pro-slavery group. The Democratic Party had become a supporter of ethnic justice as a result of the financial recovery following the Great Depression in the 1940s and 1930s, and the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s.

Democrats include Woodrow Wilson, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry S. Truman, John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, Jimmy Carter, and Bill Clinton from the twentieth century, as well as Barack Obama and Joe Biden from the twenty-first. They possess 48 of the 100 seats in the United States Senate (two of which are held by independent super delegates with the Democratic Party) and 222 of the 435 seats in the House of Representatives. A total of 24 of the 50 governors in the United States are Democrats. The party is commonly classified as a center-left to the left-wing party that advocates liberalism. The party now has 60 million enrolled members in the United States.

The contemporary liberalism concept of the party promotes economic and social justice. It aims to offer economic involvement and control by the government. These initiatives, which include social programs, anti-gun legislation, labor union backing, reasonable college tuitions, advances toward national medical treatment and fair access, product safety, and protection of the environment, are at the heart of the party's industrial plan.
