International Mothers Language Day is held on 21 February each and every year and it was the 70th edition and the theme was to promote awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity and promote multilingualism.

In the year 2018 UNESCO commemorates the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and its bold statement that ‘no discrimination can be made on the basis of language’, and celebrates its translation into more than 500 languages. The 2018 theme is “Linguistic diversity and multilingualism count for sustainable development”.

Languages are the most powerful instruments of preserving and developing our tangible and intangible heritage. All moves to promote the dissemination of mother tongues will serve not only to encourage linguistic diversity and multilingual education but also to develop fuller awareness of linguistic and cultural traditions throughout the world and to inspire solidarity based on understanding, tolerance, and dialogue.
