The Alai Darwaza and Jama'at Khana were the 2 main monuments erected by Ala-ud-din Khalji, the 2nd Khalji Sultan of Delhi, in his capital Delhi in 1311 AD. The Alai Darwaza is the primary entrance from the Quwwat-ul-Islam Mosque's south side.
The Khalji or Khilji empire was a Turko-Afghan monarchy that governed over the Delhi Sultanate for about 3 generations, from 1290 to 1320, and controlled over huge swaths of the Indian subcontinent. The 2nd monarchy to govern the Delhi Sultanate of India was established by Jalal ud din Firuz Khalji and ascended the throne in a revolt that signified the change of authority from Turkic nobility to Afghans. Its reign is remembered for advances into modern-day South India and for effectively repelling Mongol empire of India.

Alaud-Dn Khalj (r. 1296–1316), also known as Alauddin Khilji or Alauddin Ghilji, was a Turco-Afghan monarch of the Khalji dynasty that governed the Delhi Sultanate in the Indian subcontinent. He was born Ali Gurshasp. Alauddin made several substantial administrative improvements in the areas of revenue, pricing controls, and society.

Jalaluddin's nephew and son-in-law, Alauddin, was his predecessor's nephew and son-in-law. After Jalaluddin deposed the Mamluks and became Sultan of Delhi, Alauddin was awarded the title of Amir-i-Tuzuk (equivalent to the master of ceremonies). Following a successful invasion on Bhilsa, Alauddin was chosen leader of Kara in 1291, then monarch of Awadh in 1296, after crushing an insurrection against Jalaluddin. Alauddin stormed Devagiri in 1296 and amassed enough wealth to mount an effective insurrection against Jalaluddin. He solidified his dominance in Delhi after executing Jalaluddin and subdued Jalaluddin's children in Multan.
