Jhalkaribai was the daughter of Sodoba Singh and Jamuna Devi. She was born on 22 November 1830 in Bhojala village near Jhansi. After the death of her mother, when she was a teenager, her father raised her like a son. From childhood, she was well-versed in horse riding and weapons. But considering the social conditions of that time, Jhalakari Bai could not get elementary education. But like a warrior, Jhalakarbai had received a lot of training.

Jhalakarbai is considered to be like Rani Lakshmibai. She married a gunner soldier Puran Singh, who used to guarding the artillery of Rani Lakshmibai. Puran Singh was the one who had introduced Jhalakarbai to Rani Lakshmibai. Later, Jhalakari Bai also joined Rani Laxmibai's army. After joining the army, Jhalakari Bai took the practice related to war and became a skilled soldier.
At the time of the rebellion of 1857, General Rose attacked Jhansi on 23 March 1858 with his huge army. Rani bravely faced the huge army from her 5000 army team. The queen was waiting for help from Peshwa in Kalpi but she could not get any help because Tatya Tope General was defeated regularly.

Soon the English army had entered Jhansi and the queen was fighting with her life to save Jhansi. At that time, Jhalakari Bai decided to fight for the sake of saving the lives of Rani Laxmibai, as a queen herself, in this way Jhalakari Bai had attracted the entire English army on its side so that Rani Lakshmibai could be safely pulled out from the other side.
In this way, Jhalakari Bai used to fight himself as a queen, and General's army started attacking Jhalakaribai as a queen. But at the end of the day, he came to know that he is not a queen.

In 1951 B.L Verma mentioned in the queen of the novel Jhansi by Verma has given special place to Jhalakari Baai in her novel. In his novel, he described Jhalakaribai as the ordinary female soldier of the Korean and Rani Lakshmibai's army team.
In another novel, we see mention of Jhalakari Baai, which was written by Ram Chandra Heron this year, the name of that novel was motta. Heron called Jhalakarbai as "the lucky and brave martyr".
The first autobiography of Jhalakari Baibi was written by Bhavani Shankar Visharad in 1964, Bhavani Shankar had written his autobiography in view of Verma's novel and research based on the life of Jhalkari Bai.
After some time later, the great men likened Jhalakaribai to the life character of Rani Lakshmibai.

The Indian Archaeological Survey also mentioned Jhalakaribai in the Museum of Panch Panchal, Jhansi Fort.
